It feels like there will be no end to talking about the typical cuisine of the archipelago. In this beloved country, there are thousands of cultures, including culinary ones that we do not know. In late 2023, I got the opportunity to taste the cuisine in Pekanbaru that I had never tasted.
Pekanbaru
2023 became my first visit to the city that has the nickname of this Lucky City. Many years ago, our family was already familiar with this city because one of my relatives settled in Pekanbaru after getting married.
We also always send news, especially when forest and land fires often hit the Riau coast, resulting in a fairly disturbing smoke impact. Moreover, our relatives have 3 children under five who are very varied in respiratory disorders.
Pekanbaru is known as a city of palm oil and petroleum. My relatives who live in Pekanbaru alone have acres of oil palm plantations. Pekanbaru is familiar with the life of the river because it is located flanking the Siak River, the deepest river in Indonesia with a length of 370 km.

The new week is the capital of Pekanbaru Province, one of the provinces on the island of Sumatra, so no wonder the culture (and culinary in Pekanbaru) is very attached to Malay culture. Not only that, but the customs and culture of Malay in Pekanbaru are also influenced by Islamic culture.
I love Riau’s traditional house that is found everywhere. Accents, decorations, and engravings add to the charm of a traditional house called the House of Selaso Fall Twins or Falling Selaso Hall. This traditional house can be marked with the part of the roof that has wood decorations that stick out upwards and crosses that look very beautiful. An almost the same traditional house when visiting Bintan, Riau Islands.
We arrived at Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport and were greeted with heat. My relatives joked when the hot Pekanbaru weather was said to be due to Pekanbaru being above the oil layer.
RM Mr. Nurdin
The
stomach that began to rumble led us to enjoy lunch with a menu of field
cuisine. This menu is chosen because the restaurant we go to is in line
with our destination hotel. In addition, it feels like no one rejects
the taste of field cuisine that everyone already knows.
Similarly, at dinner, our colleague invited us back to eat at a famous field restaurant in New Week, RM Nurdin, located on Jl. HR Soebrantas, Pekanbaru. This restaurant was established in 2006 and is in a strategic location, so it is often crowded at mealtimes. Menong's friends do not need to worry because this restaurant provides a fairly spacious parking space.
RM Pak Nurdin serves a typical field dish. As well as dishes in the field restaurant, various foods are served on small plates on the table. From his appearance, it all looks tempting; it makes me think of the promise of diet and the last cholesterol level that makes me squirm.
I miss the intestinal innards (tampus/iso, Sundanese) or lung, kikil, or chopped that usually tastes spicy. Friends who like jengkol can choose the heart of the chicken mix of jengkol.
As usual, I chose rendang; I want to taste the best food in the world, Pekanbaru version. It does not disappoint; according to many reviews that give 5 stars, the scent of the mussel is really kicking.

Rendang colors tend to be darker, which signifies the length of the cooking process. Rendang seasoning soaks inward, even though Rendang still feels dense and not dissolved but soft. RM Nurdin is also famous for its jerky, which has a distinctive aroma and taste with a steady seasoning on the tongue.
We
don't have to wait long because the waiter is ready to serve us. The
room looks clean and spacious. We chose to eat at a regular table even
though RM Nurdin provides a lesehan table for visitors who want to
relax. I also took the time to pray Isha in a small mosque. Toilets are
also available in sufficient quantities and look clean.
Wareh Kupie Arifin Ahmad
The second night we were invited to enjoy another typical culinary Pekanbaru. This time we stopped by Wareh Kupie Arifin Ahmad, the ruler of Aceh, who opened an Acehnese cuisine shop that provides Aceh coffee, Aceh noodles, savory rice, and goat sugar, which is part of the culinary scene in Pekanbaru.
There are two Wareh Kupe in Pekanbaru. Menong's friends can choose a place on Jalan Kaharudi Nasution Simpang Tiga or on Jalan Arifin Achmad. Even though it was night, Wareh Kupie's end was not also reduced.
Wooden dining areas and spacious parking become an option in themselves. In addition, visitors can see the kitchen area to peek at various drinks prepared, including the manufacture of ten chai teas that attracts my attention. Usually I enjoy the tea pull, the sachet drink version, and this time I want to enjoy the original pulled tea made from a mixture of tea and milk.
I myself chose hot tensile tea (Rp. 12,000), toast (Rp. 20,000), and seafood iced noodles for both (Rp. 30,000). Peeking at the price on the menu list, it seems relatively not so expensive considering the taste is good and the place is comfortable.
Because we've had dinner, there weren't many dishes that we could eat. It feels like wanting to linger to enjoy the culinary in Pekanbaru, but because tomorrow the task is waiting for us, this intention we undo.
