How To Get Out From Riba Part 1

Telling about how to get rid of usury is like retelling one of the amazing stories that have been in my life. I always thought it would be hard to escape Riba. How's the story? Let's check it out!

What Is Riba?

To be honest, my understanding of religion is not very deep. As far as I remember, religious lessons about usury are rarely discussed. With limited knowledge, loan sharks and bank interest may be two things from the least example of usury in our lives. I personally have never known or interacted with loan sharks in real life.
In language, usury means additional or excess (ziyadah). In terms, usury means excess or additional payment in the debt of the debt owed or the purchase of the previously required for one of the two other persons / parties who make an agreement.

Understand the Shape of Riba

Credit Card

Since working, I aspire to have a credit card as a means of payment. Unfortunately, having a credit card is not as easy as I imagined. One of the factors (it seems) is because my income is not big.

Unexpectedly, one time I got the opportunity to make a credit card without heavy requirements. In addition to shopping, credit cards can be used for financing by way of credit with zero percent interest. With an autodebit payment system, I’ve never been late to pay bills every month so that other credit card application offers come.

This magic card provides other facilities in the form of discounts. Usually we use it to find a restaurant where we gather arisan every month. Hmmm, it's fun, isn't it?

Pawn Practice

After a few years of settling in with the nomads, one of my friends introduced me to one of the customs in the land of Cianjur that I did not meet in Bandung, namely paddy paddy/garden/house.

Pawnshops borrow money from someone with a guarantee of rice fields, gardens, and/or houses. As long as the loan money has not been paid or returned, the proceeds of the rice fields or gardens become the right of borrowers of money. Likewise for the house, the borrower of money is entitled to occupy the house as long as the debt has not been paid. The payment deadline is divided into two types. Some use the deadline, for example, within five years or infinitely until the loan is paid in full.

In the early 2000s, the amount of money borrowed did not range from $2 to $5 million. At first glance, this practice is very tempting, huh? How not? The results of rice fields and gardens, such as rice, cassava, beans, papaya, bananas, and others, automatically belong to money borrowers. Sometimes the borrower is ‘kind’ to divide the proceeds of the farmer with the owner of the guarantee in a certain percentage according to the agreement.

The practice of pawnshops is also widely lived, with a nominal population of 15–20 million with various home locations on the side of the main road to enter the village. The size of the house is quite large, with 2–3 bedrooms plus a garage.

Pawn House

The owner of the contract that I was in the residence decided to inhabit the house so automatically I had to find a new contract. Qodarullah, in the midst of confusion looking for a house, I found a pawn house.

That said, the house had been pawned for almost ten years. The previous occupants will move to Bandung so that the homeowner must return the money of Rp. 12 million. But because he does not have the money, the house is offered for overpawns. So I paid a sum of money to the homeowner, who was directly given to the previous occupants.

I fell in love when I first saw this house. The paint is white, the sunlight enters the house, the kitchen is spacious, and the bathroom is clean. Unfortunately, the condition of the house is not so good.

The wall is damp because it attaches to the wall of the building next to the wall, and the tile leaks so that it damages the ceiling of the room to the hole. The ceiling of the room is also a favorite place of Anabul children, so often I hear the sound of Anabul that makes me stressed and I cannot sleep. Yep, I'm scared and don't like the sound of cats.

Home improvement is entirely my duty. The cost of a year's rent that can reach 3–5 million I can cut by occupying this pawn house. Despite being in the gang, this house is located near the main road with one-time public transport access to the office. Like many houses in the suburbs of Cianjur, in the alley there are only two houses: the house I inhabit and the home of the parents of the owner of the house that I inhabit. The rest are small gardens and rivers.

Just 2 years later, the homeowner 'forced' me to raise the price of the pawn on the grounds that it needed a business. If I don't, the owner of the house will cover the mortgage for someone else. Because I no longer have the energy to find a new contract (plus I think the price of the contract is getting more expensive every year), I finally agreed to add money by Rp. 8 million.

This kind of trick is sometimes thrown by homeowners so that we are willing to lend more money. This trick is also often ‘welcome’ to the recipient of the pawn because the higher the money borrowed, the harder the owner pays his loan and ends up releasing the guarantee to the recipient of the pawn at a lower price than the market.

I myself do not intend to 'master' this pawn house because of its location in the alley without access to the car. In addition, the house ownership letter is still in the form of a girik letter C. If the owner of the house continues to increase the price of the pawn of the house, I have to choose ‘out’ only.

Sharia Banking Financing

My mother and I live in a simple house that Mother bought from the rations of Embah housing as a retired widow of soldiers. This house is located on the outskirts of Bandung. For a long time, I had dreamed of renovating the house to make it more comfortable to live in. Because it requires considerable funds, I ventured to apply for financing from Islamic banks to complete the savings that I have long accumulated.

At that time I began to learn how to escape from usury so that I minimize conventional banks for me to use every day. I think sharia banking is an alternative to the 'shariah's banking transactions' that I choose.

Fingery filings in Islamic banks are relatively more difficult when compared to conventional banks. The purpose of financing that must be detailed for home renovation (which I know is different from conventional banks that can apply for financing for anything for no apparent reason), administrative costs are also borne by the customer in advance (different from conventional banks that will cut administrative costs from financing funds so that we do not need capital to pay administrative costs).

The year goes on, and as many Islamic studies as I follow and information about usury—the basics of the law and its applications—I started to get a lot from social media, especially Instagram and YouTube. Unsistance: the discussion of the way to escape from usury seems destined to continue to 'slap' in my timeline, as if it is to emphasize that this is the time to practice the way to escape from usury, as I learned.
