October
2 is one of the days I look forward to every year. On this special day,
almost all Indonesian citizens rejoice in wearing their favorite types
of batik on National Batik Day.
Batik My Autumons Heritage
For
a long time, batik has been a long fabric that is painted by hand using
canting with hot liquid material or wax, forming a certain motif that is typical and unique. Canting itself is a tool made of copper with a handle
made of bamboo.
Quoted
from various sources, batik techniques have been known for more than
1000 years in Ancient Egypt or Sumer. In Indonesia itself, the existence
of batik has been known since the 17th century. Wow, it's been a long
time!
There are many versions of the origin of the word 'batikbatik.' Batik comes from the words "amba" and "tik," which have the meaning of "writing" or "the art of painting dots." At first,
batik motifs were more dominated by the shapes of animals and plants.
In
the past, batik was only known as the garment of the palace's
oversized. Batik is only worn during certain events, such as weddings,
births, or deaths. Over time, batik is widely imitated by many people and
develops in many batik artcenters.
I
remember Nine—Mother of Ayahanda—and Embah—Mother of the Mother—having a collection of batik cloth writing various patterns because it
uses fabric and kebaya as a daily dress. In the past, batik fabrics had a
fairly high price and became one of the items that could be mortgaged.
It’s
like I just have two batik cloths. One I bought at a relatively cheap
price because I myself once lived as a 'boat trader,' and one
more I got as a gift from Embah. Unfortunately, the two batik that I have
sewn into this top has changed hands because it no longer 'shouts
on my body.' ๐
UNESCO
During
this course, we have always associated batik as part of Javanese
culture. Apparently, batik is not only owned by the people on the island
of Java. Almost all areas in the archipelago have their own distinctive batik
with distinctive patterns and different philosophies. This noble legacy,
of course, we must protect in order to retain the identity of this
nation. With this pride, Indonesia proposes batik as a humanitarian
heritage for humanitarian and non-objective culture to UNESCO.
On
October 2, 2009, good news was obtained by Indonesia because UNESCO
ultimately designated batik as the original cultural heritage of
Indonesia, a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity, or the great work of human heritage for oral and non-material culture. And now, October 2 is designated as a national batik day.
Not
only Indonesians, but also many foreign nationals are interested and happy to
wear batik. In every international event, there are many foreign guests
or foreign tourists who are excited to wear batik. Batik is also a pride,
so it is widely used as an official or uniform dress in either school
or office.
The mothers do not love batik, proven by the service clothes every day; more mothers choose dusters with batik fabrics and motifs.
Menong's friends can also visit the Batik Exhibition,
which is widely held in various cities. This annual event became my
favorite event for shopping for different types of batik in one place.
Type Batik
Batik
writing occupies the best quality batik caste. Made specifically by hand, a special feature of batik writing is the pattern that is not
uniform. Its uniqueness and beauty depend fully on the skill of the
batik. Batik writing has the same color on both sides and has a
distinctive ‘night’ scent. Writing time takes months. No wonder if the
quality and price will be different when compared to other types of
batik.
In
addition to writing batik, batik is also made with other methods,
namely with the help of a stamp made of iron slabs or copper to form an
orderly pattern. Batik cap is much loved because of its medium quality
at a relatively affordable price.
Now
batik is also mass-produced, which is commonly called batik prints made
using screen printing without the use of ‘night.’ Because it is made
with prints, batik print has a characteristic pattern that is uniform
and regular. The quality of print batik is far below that of batik and
stamp.
In
the era of free trade, batik is no longer produced on a limited basis
because many are made using textile machines called batik printing. Batik printing is also one of the 'import' products that flood the Indonesian market a lot. But Man Menong can certainly compare the price and quality of this batik printing.
If
in the past, batik cloth was only identical as a'mpulsile’ dress to
attend invitations that are only used by the elders as a subordinate
cloth or shirt for men, now batik can be used for various events, both
official and relaxed (not just daster!). Even millennials are no less
stylish with batik with various models.
At
this time, the motif and color of batik no longer follow the package.
Contemporary batik uses more colors when compared to classic batik, which uses a lot of dark colors. Similarly, the cloth used is no longer
fixable on the mori cloth.
Woven
fabric, cotton, silk, Paris, or Dobby can be friends Menong choose. I
myself still like mori fabric because it looks close to the original
fabric and is comfortable to wear in hot weather. Moreover, I have to
often mobile in many cities in West Java whose weather is no colder than Bandung.
Although
I like the type of batik with a variety of colors in everyday life,
especially when working, I also prefer classic patterns and colors for
official batik.
There
is something interesting about this national batik day. In college, one
of the lecturers reminded us to wear batik on October 2. And as a result of that day, we all went to college with a colorful batik. Likewise,
during a practical visit to the industry—which in fact rose up and
down the location in the steel mill— It feels proud to see young
children proud to wear the type of batik with the best creations.
Beautiful once๐
