Final Retinal Detachment Surgery Experience Part 16

The experience of retinal ablation surgery made us often visit doctors at Cicendo Hospital, Bandung. Retinal ablation is a detachment of the retina that causes sudden visual impairment. We have done a series of efforts starting from the installation of 1300 cSt silicon oil, silicon with the lightest viscosity, 5000 cSt silicon oil, CF6 gas injection, scleral buckling, and HD silicon, silicon with the heaviest viscosity. After the 7th operation, Zauji began to adapt to the situation since the last check-up. Both of us have been able to do our activities as usual except for avoiding traveling at night.

Final Control

Zauji's last check-up was at Poly Retina, RS. Cicendo's eyes ended with the results of the analysis from the electroretinography (ERG) examination. ERG, or electroretinography, is an eye examination that can measure the electrical response of eye cells that are sensitive to light.

The cells that are part of the retina are called rods and cones. Cones are responsible for the eye's sensitivity to color. ERG is used to determine the condition of the retina, including the condition of cells in the macular area of the retina.

Doctor Made Indra Widyanatha, SpM (K), advised us to have a check-up every 3 months only considering that the treatment for Zauji's right eye has been maximized. Our next focus is to keep the left eye healthy and functioning well.

This time we visited the pavilion clinic on Wednesday morning to adjust our free time so as not to interfere with my work schedule. Qodarullah, Dr. Arief. S. Kartasasmita, Sp.M.K., was unavailable, so we met again with Dr. Indra. Because he already knew Zauji very well, the examination was relaxed and mostly filled with questions and answers.

Papilla and Silicone

Thank God, after all this time, the pressure conditions in the right and left eyeballs are always within the normal range. Zauji himself is still disciplined in using thymol every morning and evening plus glaupen at certain times. And the results tend to be stable eye pressure according to the standard 10 minus 21, right = 17, and left eye = 13.

Papilla conditions tend to turn pale and cannot be avoided because of the natural reaction due to repeated retinal detachment and the use of silicone. Papilla conditions are irreversible conditions; they cannot be returned to their pre-illness condition. One way to maintain this condition is by providing papilla protection in the form of eye nerve medication.

Because the condition is stable, Dr. Indra stated that the next check-up will be in 6 months unless there are complaints such as sore eyes. Although I noticed, in the past 3 months, Zauji's eyes are relatively safe from complaints such as glare, red eyes, or watery eyes because they may have started to adapt to the presence of silicone. Dr. Indra himself said that silicone actually has anti-infection properties, but as a foreign object in the eye, of course silicone will still cause side effects of body reactions such as red eyes and glaucoma (high eye pressure) if it is not evacuated for too long.

As usual, Dr. Indra also asked about the condition of the glasses and whether they were still comfortable to wear or not. Because the condition was quite stable, Dr. Indra only prescribed eye pressure-lowering drugs, namely thymol and glaupen, as well as eye nerve vitamins to maintain the papilla.

Thymol Minidose

Lazy Eyes

On that occasion, I also asked about the opportunity to optimize the right eye by using eye patches that are usually used for lazy eyes. It turns out that I misunderstood lazy eyes as I read on the internet.

Doctor Indra explained that lazy eyes usually occur when someone only wears glasses as an adult, even though they have had eye problems since childhood. The brain will be slow to process vision properly so that it seems as if the eyes are not working. In Zauji's condition, it is actually not categorized as lazy eyes.

Actually, I have bought eye patches in an online store because Zauji requested that he occasionally get used to not focusing too much on his left eye to be 'forced' to replace the function of both eyes. Until now, Zauji has not had the chance to use the eye patches that I bought.

Be grateful in all circumstances. We are often amazed at how the human body can adapt easily when there are deficiencies. Zauji himself still takes me everywhere by motorcycle. The experience of retinal ablation surgery is not a limitation for Zauji. The point is to be grateful in every situation. Alhamdulillah, ala kulli hal. Whatever happens in the next check-up, God willing, it will be a record of good deeds for both of us.
