fibers scattered and flashes in the right eye that occasionally appear
to be the beginning of the experience of retinal ablation surgery. The
complaint after the fall from this motorcycle we had ignored, and we only
went to the doctor two weeks later when intending to change the glasses.
Ablatio Retina
Due
to lack of experience, we had delayed a few days to see a doctor.
Slowly the area of view began to decrease and began to be limited to
half of the eyes. When there is an object in front, the object is only
visible to the right while the left is dark, aka blank.
We
agreed to choose Bandung Eye Center (BEC) and get. It's just that when
examined by retinal specialist BEC, the doctor referred us to go
directly to the IGD (Installation of Emergency Medicine) National Eye
Center, Cicendo Eye Hospital. It seems that the situation is serious.
Because
on Saturday, we only met the guard doctor. At IGD Cicendo Eye Hospital,
the doctor stated that Zauji's retina was removed from its place. The
only option is surgery to recreate.
Actually,
if it is still an early stage of retinal ablation or tearing a little,
doctors can still do laser photocoagulation therapy so that the retina
does not escape.

We
never thought that this was the beginning of the retinal ablation
surgery experience that Zauji had to undergo. The first operation was the installation of 1300 cSt silicon, the silicon operation with the lightest viscosity. Because
the results are not as expected, the next operation is done: the
installation of silicon oil 5000 cSt. And next injecting CF6 gas and installing several buckles to the installation of silicon HD,
silicon with the heaviest viscosity.
It
must be silicone that has been installed and will be evacuated 3-6
months post-operation. But according to the results of the agreement of all doctors,
silicone oxanas HD is maintained for as long as possible so that the
retina attaches. This is in view of the history of Zauji, who has
experienced repeated actions up to 7 times.
Sometimes
the retina appears to have stuck perfectly, but at the time of surgery
it turns out that the retina is still torn or not attached fully to
certain parts. The silicon's evacuation does not guarantee Zauji's vision would be better.
Evacuation
(lifting) of HD silicone oil will only be done when an emulsion,
rupture, or other thing interferes with the condition of the retina
or the eye in general.
But
evacuation delays make HD silicone press the nerves of the eye so
that the eye tissue is slowly damaged. As a result, the pupil is grayish.
This condition is not able to be avoided because it is like simalakama
fruit. Evacuation of silicon, which means the possibility of the retina
returning off or retaining silicon, which means damaging the papilla.
Routine Control
Until
the end of 2021, we went back and forth once a month to Cicendo with
various ‘dramas,’ such as ups and downs of eye pressure that signaled
glaucoma that required Zauji to go back and forth to the IGD or just
queue to consult at the glaucoma clinic.
In
2022, Zauji's condition, especially eye pressure, began to stabilize. As
per the instructions, the doctor allows Zauji to control every 6 months.
In addition to visual acuity and eye pressure, doctors also recommend other
examinations, namely optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electroretinography (ERG).
OCT is a medical diagnostic imaging technique that utilizes photonics and optical fiber that aims to obtain images and characterization of the tissues of both eyes.
While
ERG is an eye examination that can measure the electrical response of
eye cells that are sensitive to light. Both OCT and ERG can be
done at Cicendo Hospital for free using BPJS. Thank God we feel the benefits of BPJS to the maximum
The results of the OCT and ERG examinations did show a decrease in the
quality of eye tissue. Papil is getting pale, the response of the nerves
of the eyes is getting weaker, and the visibility is 0 meters; aka, he can no
longer see.
In
the middle of 2022, Rova's doctor intended to evacuate HD silicone
because Zauji once said he could still see a little in the corner of his
right eye, so Rova's doctor hopes to still be able to save the
remaining Zauji's right eye nerve.
It's
just that after being traced, it turns out that the vision was due to
the help of the left eye, aka 'noft.' If the left eye is completely
closed, then the right eye automatically cannot see at all but can still
feel the difference in light and dark. And finally, the operation plan
was canceled because silicone evacuation did not seem to provide
significant changes that could even cause problems due to 'sticking' the
already stable condition.
Right Eyes
Rova's
doctor does not provide any restrictions, including traveling, lifting
heavy weights (because if it is too heavy, it will certainly not be
removed, Zauji), and activities with computers that are the main
activities of Zauji. He always said that at the age of Zauji, it will not add minus eyes and will only make the eyes feel more tired.
And
now Zauji can return to pick me up every day at the office or accompany
me on duty out of town on our favorite motorcycle or public
transportation.
Zauji can also travel alone without my companionship as long as I am in the inner-city area. The
condition of the right eye that does not function causes Zauji to lose
his vision, especially for the direction on the right. Zauji relied on
the rearview mirror to monitor the condition of the vehicle on the back
of the right. Unlike the case for the vehicle right on the right side that is automatically in the 'blind spot' that will not be visible at all. It is at this point that Zauji should be more careful.
I
used to be a navigator that monitored the vehicle on the right. I also
always ask Zauji to always be careful and not in a hurry, speeding, or
overtaking. Although he avoids heavy rain or dark weather, now Zauji has
started to adapt to riding a motorcycle at night or when it rains as
long as I accompany him.
We
still continue to strive to keep the pressure of the eyeball from rising and the eye nerves from continuing to deteriorate (as the Rova
doctor said).
We tried to do therapy in Asep Setrum, which is known as an alternative treatment for stroke and pinched nerves, as an option because Zauji feels comfortable.
In early 2023, Rova's doctor only recommended Zauji for control every 6 months. Thank God now Zauji's eyeball pressure is in the normal range of 10 to 24. In
fact, he suggested that we control it once a year unless there is an
emergency such as very high eye pressure, tremendous pain, or rupture of
silicon.
The
experience of retinal ablation surgery is one of the points for us to
learn to interpret more deeply about healthy benefits. The eyes that God
has entrusted to all of us.
