For
Menong friends who like to travel, preparation becomes a very important
thing to do so that the trip and activities that will be done at the
destination run smoothly. How do I choose a bag to travel far?
Bag
The
selection of bags for traveling long distances is very important. I had
a seductive experience with the beautiful tote bag I bought at a famous
bag shop. I used the bag when I visited Ketapang, West Kalimantan.
Since
I was too lazy to wait for the queue of retrieval of goods from the luggage
of the plane, I insisted on carrying a bag to the cabin of the plane.
It turned out to feel so tired. Especially if the gate at Soekarno-Hatta
Airport is located at the very end or there is a displacement of the
gate with a considerable distance.
At
that time, I also brought a laptop bag. And when I got home, I was
given a lot of souvenirs, so I decided to put a tote bag containing
clothes into the trunk. But still, on the way home from the airport in Bandung, I had to carry three bags with a fairly heavy load, so I used a carry-on bag to travel far.
From
that experience, we choose the type of bag depending on the length of
the trip, what activities will be done, and the mode of transportation
chosen.
Overall,
the bag is divided into suitcase bags, duffel bags (including for
laptops), tote bags, and handbags. This selection of bags will differ
depending on the needs and comfort of Mengu friends.
If
Zauji and I travel for only 1-2 days, usually Zauji carries a backpack
containing his clothes and equipment while I bring a laptop backpack.
The backpack chosen is certainly a sturdy and ergonomic backpack so that
it does not make the shoulders and back tired or sore. I myself use an Eiger and Polo brand backpack with thick and cushioned bearing rope. Do
not forget to always provide a rain cover to protect the bag when it
rains.
Hardcase and Softcase
For
the duration of our trip, we chose to use a suitcase. Now hardcases
from polycarbonate or polypropylene are more often used than luggage
from canvas or nylon fiber softcases. The hardcase suitcase is designed
with a sturdy structure so that it is pressure-resistant and impact-resistant,
lighter, and resistant to sharp objects.
This
type of hardcase is very variable. Don’t be tempted by cheap prices.
Menong's friend can test his polycarbonate material by tapping the
suitcase so that he will feel a difference in the thickness and strength
of the suitcase through the resulting sound. Hardcase suitcases with
good quality certainly have a more expensive price. In addition, more
expensive suitcases have additional compartments as well as canvas
suitcases.
Even
so, Zauji prefers canvas material suitcases because, in reality, the
hardcase suitcase is more often experiencing rupture incidents, as
experienced by my friend when visiting Payakumbuh. In addition, the
canvas suitcase is more flexible when the contents of the suitcase are
more because the canvas material will follow the shape of the contents
of the suitcase, which is different from a stiff hardcase. Canvas material is
relatively friction-resistant, even though it is not waterproof as well
as hardcase materials.
Canvas
suitcases seem more old-fashioned because a large suitcase has been
changed into a hardcase, so canvas suitcases are rarely found. Suitability of zippers must also be considered.
The latest suitcases generally already use a safe frame lock because it is not easy to open, in contrast to a zipper lock (regular zipper) that is easy to open, so it tends to be unsafe. The advantage of a zipper lock is that it can be widened (expandable), which can increase the capacity of the suitcase compartment.
In
addition, make sure of the type of suitcase wheel. New model suitcases
generally have 4 wheels that can be moved easily without the need to
tilt the suitcase so that Menong's friends do not need to expend energy
to pull it. It’s just that this 4-wheel suitcase is suitable for use on
flat surfaces or items that are relatively heavy so that they are not
uprooted.
On an uneven surface, a 4-wheeled suitcase is moved in a way to pull as well as a 2-wheeled one. Choose also silent wheel so that there is no excess sound when the suitcase moves (the price must be different, yes😘)
Suitcase Size
Among friends, they can choose the size of the suitcase as needed. Usually we
choose a suitcase size of 18 inches for a 2-3 day trip, a 20-inch suitcase for a
maximum of a 5-day trip, and a 22-inch suitcase for travel over 5 days.
Menong friends who use airplanes/trains can choose a cabin-size
suitcase, a maximum of 20 inches with a maximum weight of 7 kg.
Sometimes Zauji and I travel on a motorcycle, such as when visiting the city of Cianjur and staying at the Gino Feruci. We prefer to use a suitcase (maximum size 20 inches) so that it can be
placed upright on the front of the motor so that the laptop bag can be
leaned onto the handlebars of the motor with a stable.
Keep
items such as clothes, toiletries, and others in a travel pouch according
to their type to look neat and be easy to find in a suitcase.
One
of the other tips on choosing a bag is to use a protective sheath or a
suitcase safety strap to prevent the suitcase from opening. It’s just
that, when traveling by plane, this suitcase safety strap is often
released when stored in the trunk. The key is always a suitcase with a
combination of numbers and a lock key.
Also
prepare a small bag to store HP, wallets, and other trinkets so as not
to interfere with bags/suitcases stored in the trunk/cabin.
Also
use tags or identification marks such as ribbons or special name tags in color contrast to provide bag marks to show how far they have traveled. I
personally rarely list my name, clear address, and phone number to avoid
misuse of data.
