After
falling from the motorcycle due to being hit by a car, I underwent a
series of treatments because my right elbow was broken, including
physiotherapy. The cost of physiotherapy in Bandung is something we have
to prepare for.
Arm Sling
Until 2 weeks after the accident, the elbow still could not be bent, so
we consulted back with the orthopedic section at the nearest hospital. The
doctor asked me to return to X-ray with the right hand in a bent position.
From
the photo X-ray, the doctor is already suspicious because there is a
small hole, but because the description results have not come out, the
doctor stated there is no fault, so I am allowed to train my right hand
with regular activities, including work, typing, and gymnastics.
X-ray
results show that there is a small fracture. Since the doctor was not
practicing on the same day, we finally slid to Halmahera Siaga Hospital.
Just looking at the X-rays, Dr. Jachja Achmad, Sp.OT (K), MM, the
orthopedic physician of the Hip and Knee Consultant, immediately stated
that there was a small fracture in the inner elbow.
The
‘little hole’ that looks like a black dot is indeed a fault. So small,
this fault cannot be handled with surgery because it will be difficult
to find and potentially damage other tissues.
The doctor instructed me to use an arm sling,
which was not used for activity for 2-3 weeks (24 hours a day). In this
way, it is expected that wounds, inflammation, and fractures that occur
can heal by themselves. The doctor also guided me to position my right hand
comfortably while using an arm sling. I myself let go of the arm sling only when bathing, ablution, and praying.
The doctor reminded me that the use of arm
slings will cause the muscles and joints to stiffen so that later I
have to undergo physiotherapy to restore the function of the hands.
Doctors give calcium and vitamin D to help with healing.
Release Arm Sling
During the use of the arm sling, I felt the pain and swelling in the elbows begin to disappear.
Occasionally I move my wrist to stay limp. By 3 weeks, I decided to
consult earlier with Dr. Jachja Achmad.
Before
I saw the doctor, I had an X-ray. The officer asked me to straighten my
hands. Even though I tried, my right hand couldn’t be straight because
of the overwhelming pain.
Dr.
Jachja Achmad stated that such conditions were normal. He checked the
movement of turning the shoulders, twisting the wrist, folding the hands
towards the back, and more. He also trained some movements that I could
try myself before the physiotherapy session scheduled for 10 sessions
for 3 weeks began.
I
also asked the doctor if I was allowedto work outside the city. The
doctor explained that I was allowed to move normally by using the right
hand but limited by not lifting heavy items or pressing or pushing things
because the strength of my right hand has not recovered.
The First Hypothesis
For
the first physiotherapy, we decided to do it at Halmahera Hospital
only. We enrolled the same day when we met the doctor. The first
physiotherapist is scheduled for a day, at 07.00–08.00 WIB. We arrived
at 06.00 WIB and immediately re-registered in the registration section
by providing a letter of physiotherapy referral from the doctor.
Officers provide blue cards and proof of registration that we keep on
the physiotherapy room table.
Thank
God we arrived early and served at exactly 7:00 pm. Before starting,
the therapist confirms the chronology of accidents, x-rays, diagnoses,
and referrals from doctors.
Therapy
is done for an hour, starting with the simple movement of folding the
hand towards the stomach and folding the hands towards the shoulders to try
as much as possible to direct the hand towards the neck (a position
like suffocating).
Don’t ask me what it’s like because if I’m not determined to get back healthy, it looks like I’ll stop at the first step.
The
therapist guided me patiently, painstakingly, and encouragingly.
Sometimes he gently rubbed my right hand, which still looks swollen,
especially in the elbow of the outside. We also talked throughout the
session (sometimes I ignore because of focus on the pain when the hands
are trained).
Exactly
an hour later, therapy ended. Thankfully, my hand that was originally only
able to be patted 90 degrees can now be moved up to 45 degrees towards
the shoulder. Again, the therapist reminded me that I have to start getting
used to activities with the right hand as much as possible, such as
eating (no longer being fed), putting on a veil, or washing the underwear without being helped.
Cost of Physiotherapy
When
we finished, we made the payment at the checkout. Therapy for 1 hour
without tools is charged RP. Rs. 120,000 plus administrative costs of RP.
15,000. Total = Rs. 135,000.
From
this experience, we decided to continue physiotherapy at Halmahera
Hospital at a self-medication cost on the grounds of therapy for 1 hour with a therapist, a comfortable place, and no waiting in line because each
patient has his own schedule.
We
only need to make a reservation by phone at (022) 42nd 6061. Officers will
ask for the duration of therapy. Menong's friends can choose from 07.00 WIB
to 10.00 WIB. The day before therapy, the hospital will confirm via WhatsApp. Menong friends can cancel the reservation at any time if there
is a schedule change.
In
the last session of physiotherapy that I had to follow, I got a
'division time discount of 50%' because the therapist thought I could
already do therapy independently. This last session I did for 30 minutes
with the use of sandbags to train muscle strength.
Next,
the therapist 'forbids' me to come back and instructs me to practice at
home only. This 30-minute cost is Rp. 90,000 plus admin Rp. 15,000.
Of
course, it will be different from the physiotherapy facility by using
BPJS. Based on the experience of the mother, who had undergone
physiotherapy for pinched nerves and Zauji, who had undergone physiotherapy for a shoulder injury, physiotherapy was done for 15 minutes with a time span of
2-3 x per week for 3 months.
Physiotherapy
services are not only provided by government or private hospitals but also by self-help agencies with more varied costs and services, including
homecare services.
Reported
from various sites, physiotherapy costs in Bandung range from Rp. 60,000 to Rp. 400,000 per session. The cost of physiotherapy for the case
I experienced (elbow dextra) in one of the homecares, Jl. Mount
Batu, Bandung, provides a rate of Rp. 275,000 for an hour with a female
therapist. This difference depends on the type of physiotherapy,
duration, technique, and use of the tool.
