Maggot Cultivation for Beginners

When the pandemic was almost 3 years ago, we spent more time looking for new things to learn. Because Zauji is still pursuing the business of buying and selling arowana fish, we become diligent in surfing, looking for more quality feed alternatives. Maggots, or fly larvae, became one that was talked about a lot at the time. Inadvertently, we had time to peek at the maggot culture that can be developed by beginners like us.

Maggots are fly larvae that are widely used as animal feed, such as fish or chickens, and as part of organic fertilizers. When you see the shape similar to maggots, it feels like Menong’s friend will agree to ‘avoid’ this one cultivation. Moreover, maggot cultivation places are generally far from clean and neat.

Initially, we learned about maggot cultivation through YouTube content or online courses that we often participated in during the pandemic. We also had time to practice the cultivation of this maggot at home with instructions on the way the work was given by the source. I don't know what's not right; this maggot larva doesn't 'appear.' In our analysis, it seems because our environment in industrially densely populated areas makes it difficult to lure maggot flies.

One time ago we saw a signpost inscribed with this maggot cultivation not far from the mother's house. We also stopped by to peek at the cultivation of this maggot directly.

How to Cultivate Maggots

The place we visited seemed to have been unoccupied with a long-standing house and empowered by Karang Taruna for an activity place. Sure enough, when we stopped by, there was a group of young men who were engrossed in cleaning. We also ask permission to see the cultivation of maggots as well as ask your friends of Karang Taruna to share knowledge about the cultivation of this maggot with us.

What should be prepared for this maggot cultivation? Yuks, let's see!

Types of Flies

A maggot is a black soldier fly or Hermetia illucens fly. This fly has a dashing body shape in accordance with its 'name,' soldier, aka warrior. Its body shape is slightly large to resemble a wasp when compared to houseflies, greenflies, or fruit flies. So physically, this black fly was just the first time I saw.

If Menong's friends are confused about getting a black soldier fly, Menong's friends can buy it online or directly at the maggot cultivation place.

Preparation of the place

In the cultivation of maggots, inevitably we have to prepare a special place for each stage.

Place Breeding Site

The first place to prepare is the place for the flies to lay eggs. Plastic containers are the easiest and relatively inexpensive choice of places. This container is more important because it is waterproof and easy to clean. The container became the place where the flies laid this egg.

Egg Collection Place

Once the fly lays eggs, the eggs are separated from the first container into a special container until the eggs hatch.

Larvae Treatment Place

When the egg hatches and becomes a larva, we must prepare the container needed to treat the larvae until the growth is optimal. From the described young coral cadets, if we have a large place, the treatment of larvae can be placed in one room only.

The room used must have a certain temperature, humidity, and ventilation. In this room, we will prepare according to the needs of the flies that you cultivate. Food also needs to be provided, usually in the form of organic materials such as food waste or agricultural waste.

When we asked, it turned out that these young men collected food waste from the residents who had regularly separated organic and non-organic waste. Great, yes! 😍

How to Harvest Maggot

As with other cultivation, in this maggot cultivation, we also harvest when the size of the maggot has reached the size we want. Maggots are separated from the rest of the food, or pupae. Maggots can be used as fish feed or for other livestock, such as chickens. Maggots are also used as organic fertilizers.

When visiting an MSME product stand at an ornamental fish show, we found a more practical dry maggot product to take advantage of. Maggot is widely used as an alternative feed for arowana fish to bring out color.

The youth also allowed Menong's friends to buy directly the black soldier fly tool in anticipation of it being difficult to find this type of fly in the Menong area, such as at the location of our house, which is indeed in densely populated settlements not far from the factory area.

Actually, I am amused to see this collection of maggots, but curiosity beats fear. It turns out that it's also fun to take a peek at the cultivation of this maggot!
