After my many assignments to Makassar, I finally got around to visiting Fort Ujung Pandang (Fort Rotterdam). Located on Jl. Ujung Pandang No. 1, Makassar, South Sulawesi, it is still around the city, so Menong's friends will find it easy to get there. The fort, whose authenticity has been preserved to this day, is a relic of the Sultanate of Gowa. Fort Rotterdam is made of a mixture of stone and clay, which is burned to dry.

The Original Fort of Rotterdam

The name Rotterdam itself comes from the name of the birthplace of Governor Speelman, the Governor-General of the Netherlands who rebuilt the fort, which was destroyed during the attack on the Sultanate of Gowa.

A beautiful atmosphere welcomes every visitor as soon as they enter the main gate. The fort walls are 5 meters high and 2 meters thick. This fort is in the shape of a pentagon or like a turtle, so it used to be called Payyua Fortress.

Prince Diponegoro Detention Room

Inside this fort there is also the La Galigo Museum, a museum of collections of prehistoric, numismatic, foreign ceramics, history, manuscripts, and ethnography. In addition to this, in the fort there is a detention room for Prince Diponegoro when he was exiled by the Dutch.

Fort Ujung Pandang (Fort Rotterdam) is the destination of choice when Menong's friends visit Makassar, South Sulawesi.
